There are a lot of good people in local music, and Andy Waldeck is one of them. His warm smile and easygoing attitude might shadow
the fact that he's seen a lot in "the business" - having toured nationally with bands Egypt and Earth to Andy. But he remains engaging and friendly
and absolutely professional in his craft, whether he's laying down an original or sharing his version of a powerful cover tune. Andy sings from his
heart and soul, and will be playing at Reading Rocks with his "Rock & Roll Band." Who else is in his
band? You'll just have to come out to see. ;-)
The Hook calls Six Day Bender "the coolest new-school bluegrass ensemble Charlottesville has produced since the Hackensaw Boys." That's high
praise for a group of fellas who, just over a year ago, were merely hanging out in a big post-UVA party house playing familiar
pickin' tunes and working out some of their own. And the Bender have quickly taken their appealing sound on the road - playing out of state almost as
much as taking gigs in familiar local haunts such as Miller's. So we are lucky to be a part of their summer schedule ~ check 'em out and see what all the fuss is about. And don't
forget to enter the Reading Rocks Raffle ~ you might win a hat signed by the band.
Junior Moment & the Fun Thieves are no strangers to Cardinal Point, having hosted several festival events and playing at
the winery's annual Oyster Festival. Joined by Stephen Barling of B.C. fame a little over a year ago, JrM continues to play festivals while enjoing regular
gigs at spots in (and out) of town - Fellini's #9, Coup de Ville's, and Dr. Ho's Humble Pie. Known for their catchy not-quite-pop-or-alt-country originals, the
band always delivers an eclectic set of their own tunes, and unique interpretations of covers. They've been called everything from "neo-psychedelic" to "family friendly folk rock" to "guitar-driven power pop," but the one thing you'll surely call them is fun.
No Charlottesville band has done as much for 'good 'ol new' country music - locally and now regionally - as Jim Waive & the Young Divorcees.
With their addictive late-night gigs downtown, the Divorcees captured a devoted audience of foot-stomping, two-stepping
scenesters. But Jim & his band are just as comfortable on the big stage, opening shows at the Charlottesville Pavilion for country music
legends Dwight Yoakum and Randy Travis. The Divorcees will join the impressive lineup at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion this September,
but in the meantime we are lucky to have them at Reading Rocks!
There are few names in area music that strike a more universally familiar chord than Darrell Rose. If you haven't taken drum lessons from him by now, or know someone who has, you probably will soon! You'd never
guess from his hands-on work and down-to-earth demeanor that he's played alongside master African drummer Baba Olatunji, had a video on MTV, or toured with the Wailers. Yes, THE Wailers. But Darrell finds himself
just as much at home jamming with area musicians such as the International Councillors - featuring Kurt Patterson on Afrikan percussion, Mosiah on drums, Matthew Wilner on bass, and Greg Howard on Chapman stick and alto sax.
Amazing talents bring the collective groove home to the festival.
